In addition to teaching at a number of institutions, I have acted in a number of educational roles. At the statewide level, I am a former Representative At-Large of the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges (2001-2002) and was nominated (not appointed) to Governor Schwarzenegger’s Office for the California Community College Board of Governors (2006). I have conducted external accreditation, departmental and tenure reviews (Moreno Valley College,
Kalamazoo Community College, and Willamette University) and have served as a board member of the General Anthropology Division, American Anthropological Association (2009-2011) and the national organization Dads and Daughters (2003-2004). I have been a participant in a number of National Endowment for the Humanities seminars, including, Human Rights in Conflict: Interdisciplinary Perspectives (CUNY Graduate Center, 2006), Terror and Culture: Revisiting Hannah Arendt’s Origins of Totalitarianism (Stanford University, 2005), and American Cities and Public Spaces (Library of Congress, 2005-2006, pictured above). I was also a participant in the U.S. Institute of Peace seminar (2007) and the German-government-funded Critical Theme Park Studies project (2018-2019).
Locally, I have served as Academic Senate President at Lake Tahoe Community College (2001-2002, 2005-2006, 2006-2007, 2008-2009, 2018-2019), Faculty Union President at Lake Tahoe Community College (2008-2009, 2009-2010, 2010-2011, 2011-2012, 2014-2015), and Negotiator (CTA/CCA) at Lake Tahoe Community College (2009-2010, 2010-2011, 2011-2012, 2013-2014, 2014-2015, 2015-2016).
